International Earth Day 2006 Proclamation, San Francisco

WHEREAS, the first Earth Day was celebrated on the first day of spring on March 21, 1970; and

WHEREAS, plans for the first Earth Day were announced in San Francisco at the November 1969 United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization Conference on the Environment; and

WHEREAS, the first Earth Day proclamation was issued by
San Francisco Mayor Joseph Alioto on March 21, 1970; and

WHEREAS, Earth Day was, and is, followed by the Environmental Teach-In on April 22, and
World Environment Day on June 5, we celebrate a season for Earth; and

WHEREAS, the equinox is recognized as a unique moment of global equilibrium and spring equinox is an ancient celebration by people of every creed and culture as a symbol of renewal; and

WHEREAS, the United Nations Peace Bell is sounded every year on the equinox as part of a global appeal for universal peace and understanding, environmental protection, and human community; and

WHEREAS, let every individual and institution now think and act as a responsible trustee of Earth, ecologically, economically, and ethically, to create a sustainable future, without pollution, poverty and violence, awaken us to the wonder of life, and foster peaceful progress in the human adventure; and

WHEREAS, the City of San Francisco acknowledges the local arrival of spring at 10:26 am, Monday, March 20, 2005, the spring equinox, and invites the people of San Francisco to listen at the moment of the equinox, and join in the ringing of peace bells, worldwide, in honor of the Earth; now

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that I, Gavin Newsom, Mayor of the City and County of San Francisco, in our tradition to honor peace, justice, and care of our Earth on the day of the spring equinox, join with all San Franciscans and the world community in remembrance of Earth's wonder, beauty, and intricate life, and do hereby proclaim March 20, 2006 as International Earth Day
